The 2020 Las Vegas Raiders Complete Offensive Manual

Jon Gruden and the 2020 Las Vegas Raiders were a fun offseason study. The offense is characterized by multiple personnel groupings and features ways to get their best receivers, Darren Waller and Hunter Renfrow, the football in space and down the field. The Las Vegas Raiders are the first team I have studied that I would call an Inside Zone team, with nearly 17% of their play calls involving the concept (called runs and RPO’s). Outside zone, by comparison, makes up only 10% of the play calls. The Raiders had many game-plan specific versions of Inside Zone that were built off of their bread and butter versions. The Raiders were a great 3rd down team in 2020, ranking 6th in the NFL with an overall conversion rate of 46%. The concept selection that drove this success was built around a ball-control quick passing attack that focused on getting the ball to Waller and Renfrow. The Choice/Lookie package led the way in this regard. Choice and Lookie were called on 21 third downs, and the Raiders converted 52% of these situations.
